Valerian Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract — Valeriana officinalis Dried Root Glycerite
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a tall perennial of the Caprifoliaceae family, native to damp meadows, ditches and woodland edges across Europe and temperate Asia. It reaches one to one and a half metres, with grooved hollow stems, pinnate leaves of many toothed leaflets and broad domed heads of small pale pink to white flowers with a sweet scent. The part used is the rhizome with its attached rootlets, dug in autumn from second-year plants, washed and dried at low temperature. Dried valerian root is greyish-brown and fibrous, with a strong and unmistakable odour, and a taste that is sweetish at first then camphoraceous and bitter.
The raw material is ethically wild harvested, or grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Extraction is by classical maceration at the lowest practical temperature, in a base of vegetable glycerin and purified artesian water — glycerin and water are the only solvents. The product contains no alcohol, no added sugar, no preservatives and no artificial colours. Its mildly sweet taste comes from the vegetable glycerin itself.
Every incoming batch is tested in our own laboratory to confirm botanical identity and consistency, using HPTLC fingerprinting and FTIR spectral analysis, alongside microbiological screening, viscosity and refractometric measurement. Quality control is guided by USP, Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP standards, and a certificate of analysis is available for every batch. Produced at an FDA-registered facility in Honolulu, Hawaii, and shipped from our EU warehouse.

- A glycerite is a liquid plant extract prepared with vegetable glycerin and water instead of alcohol. The plant material is macerated in the glycerin–water base, then pressed and filtered.
- How is it different from a tincture?
- A tincture uses alcohol as the solvent. This product is alcohol-free: the only solvents are vegetable glycerin and purified water.
