Red Sage Alcohol-Free Liquid Extract — S. miltiorrhiza Dried Root Glycerite
Red sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), known as dan shen, is a perennial of the Lamiaceae family, native to the hillsides and stream banks of China and Japan. It grows thirty to eighty centimetres, with hairy square stems, pinnate leaves of three to seven ovate leaflets, and whorls of two-lipped purple-blue flowers. The part used is the root, which is strikingly coloured: bright brick-red to purplish-red outside. Roots are lifted in autumn from plants two or three years old, washed and dried. Dried red sage root is dark red-brown and hard, with a faint earthy scent and a bitter taste.
The raw material is ethically wild harvested, or grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. Extraction is by classical maceration at the lowest practical temperature, in a base of vegetable glycerin and purified artesian water — glycerin and water are the only solvents. The product contains no alcohol, no added sugar, no preservatives and no artificial colours. Its mildly sweet taste comes from the vegetable glycerin itself.
Every incoming batch is tested in our own laboratory to confirm botanical identity and consistency, using HPTLC fingerprinting and FTIR spectral analysis, alongside microbiological screening, viscosity and refractometric measurement. Quality control is guided by USP, Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP standards, and a certificate of analysis is available for every batch. Produced at an FDA-registered facility in Honolulu, Hawaii, and shipped from our EU warehouse.
